Fayetteville, NC-Based Atlas Resource Management was honored
with the "Best Highway-Heavy Project" Pinnacle Award from Carolinas AGC
for its work as general contractor for the McKinney Lake Dam
Remediation. This unique project in Hoffman, NC involved demolition of an existing earth fill dam and construction of a new roller compacted concrete dam, the first of its kind to be built in North Carolina. By embracing innovative technology, Atlas was able to deliver a very successful first in North Carolina dam remediation, while saving millions of dollars for the owner, the state of North Carolina. Atlas took on the project while many other contractors chose not to even bid it. Challenges encountered by Atlas Resource Management included maintaining the dam in a partially active state to support an ongoing fish hatchery operation during winter months, developing a custom safety plan which allowed prompt response to a potential dam breach, and environmental concerns about the impact of changing water levels. The Best Highway-Heavy Project award was presented at the Carolinas AGC annual convention at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach, FL, on January 18, 2003 Click here to download this article
